City Implementing More Than 150 of GBC-Presidents' Roundtable Recommendations
Baltimore City has implemented, or is in the process of implementing, more than two-thirds of the efficiency recommendations Mayor Martin O'Malley pledged to accept from the Greater Baltimore Committee - Presidents' Roundtable report, "Managing for Success," according to a state report to the Maryland General Assembly.

Of 266 recommendations made by the GBC-Presidents' Roundtable in its first report issued to Mayor Martin O'Malley in July 2000, the city eventually accepted 223. So far, 73 have been implemented and another 82 have been partially implemented, according to a report by the Maryland Department of Legislative Services.

More than half of the 52-page report, a fiscal overview of Baltimore City compiled for the 2002 session of the Maryland General Assembly, is devoted to reviewing the city's response to two sets of efficiency recommendations made by the GBC-Presidents' Roundtable.

2012 Olympics in Region Could Yield $850 Million in Construction
Olympic organizers could spend up to $850 million on new construction in Baltimore and Washington should the region be selected to host the 2012 Olympics, advocates told more than 100 architects, engineers and corporate executives who attended a Feb. 28 GBC update on the region's bid.

New venues to be constructed in Baltimore would include a new arena, where gymnastic competitions would be held, and a cycling velodrome. In Washington D.C., a new 50,000-seat Olympic stadium would need to be built on the site of the existing RFK stadium, said Dan Knise, executive director of Chesapeake 2012, the region's Olympic bid organization.

EDUCATION UPDATE: "Find a Way" to Support Thornton Education Funding Goals, GBC Urges Lawmakers; State Educators Mull Effects of New Federal Law
Despite the difficult budget challenges facing the Maryland General Assembly this year, the Greater Baltimore Committee is urging lawmakers to "find a way" to support the recommendations of a state commission that has called for increasing state public school funding by up to $1.1 billion annually within five years.

Meanwhile, the Maryland State Department of Education is reviewing the comprehensive new federal education reform law to gauge its impact on Maryland's public schools.

The law, signed on January 8 by President Bush, will likely prompt the state to revise testing and its annual school performance report card, department officials have told the GBC. Among other things, the state must more clearly define "adequate yearly progress" for schools and must develop new criteria for what constitutes a "highly qualified" teacher.

Written and directed by Morhaim and Chris Bedford, the film shares the work and vision of Virginia architect William McDonough and chemist Dr. Michael Braungart and their growing movement to transform the relationship between commerce and nature. The two operate based on the philosophy of "waste equals food." Their goal is to build a sustainable economy that is environmentally sound without sacrificing productivity and profitability.
