1. 14 BUSINESSES TO BE HONORED FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE ON DECEMBER 17
Baltimore City Mayor Martin O'Malley, the GBC and the Baltimore Development Corporation will honor 14 businesses for their community service initiatives at the 2002 Mayor's Business Recognition Awards Luncheon on December 17, 11:30 a.m. at the Hyatt Regency Baltimore.

2. FRY IS FEATURED SPEAKER AT DECEMBER 11 LEADERSHIP EVENT
GBC President Donald C. Fry will be featured at a breakfast seminar on December 11, presented by The Leadership. As the GBC's fifth chief executive in the organization's 47-year history, Fry will be available to answer questions about the future direction of the GBC and the Baltimore region. The seminar will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the Renaissance Harborplace Hotel with a continental breakfast, followed by the program at 8 a.m.

3. DECEMBER 16: LEARN THE IMPACT OF FEDERAL, STATE ELECTION RESULTS ON THE BUSINESS AGENDA
A panel of government affairs experts will examine the impact that the federal and state election results will have on the business agenda at the GBC's Business Education Seminar on Monday, December 16. The event, entitled "Changing Political Tides," begins at 8:15 a.m. at the Holiday Inn Inner Harbor and will feature John A. Merrigan, chair of the Federal Affairs and Legislation Practice for Piper Rudnick LLP's Washington, D.C. office; Sean Looney of Verizon Maryland; Paul A. Tiburzi from Piper Rudnick LLP; Mark L. Wasserman of the University of Maryland Medical Systems and former secretary of the Department of Business and Economic Development; and Paul Schurick, spokesman for Governor-Elect Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. The cost for GBC members is $40 per person.

4. GBC TO HOST DECEMBER 19 FORUM TO BUILD SUPPORT FOR BALTIMORE REGION RAIL PLAN
The GBC will host a transportation forum on Thursday, December 19 to build consensus and support for the creation of a rail transit system for the Baltimore region. The event, beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the Renaissance Harborplace Hotel, will outline the specifics of the proposed Baltimore Regional Rail Plan strategy for developing transportation in the Greater Baltimore region and the development of a long-term rail transit system. Co-sponsors include the Transit Riders League of Metropolitan Baltimore, the Baltimore Regional Partnership, the Citizens Planning and Housing Association, and the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore. The cost for the event is $25 per person.

1. DONALD C. FRY BECOMES GBC'S NEW PRESIDENT
Donald C. Fry became president of the GBC on November 1. Former GBC president Donald P. Hutchinson is now the president of SunTrust Bank's Maryland region.

2. SARBANES, SHEA AND STEINBERG OUTLINE SWEEPING RULE CHANGES FOR CORPORATE OVERSIGHT
U. S. Senator Paul Sarbanes is calling on the nation's business leadership to embrace the spirit of new corporate oversight regulations and to "get back to traditional high standards" in operating their businesses. Sarbanes, the keynote speaker at the GBC's Business Outlook Conference on October 30, joined Jim Shea, managing partner at Venable LLP, and Richard Steinberg, senior partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers, in outlining sweeping changes in accounting oversight and board responsibilities.

3. FORECAST FROM CRIPPS: INVESTMENT ROLLER COASTER WILL GIVE WAY TO "FLATNESS"
The roller-coaster ride experienced by capital investors in the U.S. since September 11, 2001 could give way to a prolonged period characterized by a"relatively flat trading range," a prominent economic strategist told an audience of more than 350 GBC members at the Business Outlook 2003 Conference on October 30.

4. DAILY RECORD PUBLISHES AD SERIES HIGHLIGHTING GBC
A series of full-page informational ads featuring Greater Baltimore Committee volunteer executives began appearing November 11 in the Daily Record. The ads, which will appear in the paper in six-week long segments through the second week of January, are intended to raise community awareness of the GBC's role as a business advocate.

5. STATE TOURISM DEPARTMENT BRACES FOR 2003 BUDGET
Facing predicted across-the-board budget cuts for most state agencies in 2003, the Maryland Office of Tourism Development (OTD) is working to preserve its modest $13 million budget by delivering a straightforward message to the new administration and legislators, OTD Director Hannah Lee Byron told members of the GBC Hospitality and Tourism Industry Group at its November 12 meeting.

6. REGIONAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS FEATURED IN EARLY DECEMBER "ISSUES & ANSWERS"
"Issues & Answers," a public affairs show produced by Comcast Cable in conjunction with the GBC, will highlight regional leadership programs in December. GBC President Donald C. 7. SEYMOUR PROVIDES 8-STEP APPROACH TO CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING
Dr. Sam Seymour, business coordinator for Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, presented his eight-step approach to creative problem solving at the GBC's November 6 Breakfast Briefing at the Johns Hopkins University Downtown Center.
