1. GBC'S JAN. 27 LEGISLATIVE FORUM: "NEW LEADERSHIP, FINANCIAL WOES, GROWING NEEDS"
On Monday, January 27, find out about the hottest issues in the 2003 Maryland General Assembly at the GBC's annual Legislative Forum, held at the Hyatt Regency Baltimore. At the 8:15 a.m. program, prominent legislative leaders will discuss the potential impact of Maryland's first Republican governor in 36 years, a state legislature comprised of more than 50 new faces, and the task of managing an operating fund deficit of nearly $1.8 billion.

2. GBC LEADERSHIP HOSTS "GEEKS & GEEZERS" AUTHOR ON JAN. 23
Robert J. Thomas, co-author of the book Geeks & Geezers: How Era, Values and Defining Moments Shape Leaders will address The Leadership Association at its breakfast on Thursday, January 23. Beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the Hyatt Regency Baltimore, Thomas will discuss the highly acclaimed book, which analyzes the differences in the leadership styles of leaders over age 70 and under age 35.

3. GBC INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY
The following policies will take effect if there is inclement weather on the day of a GBC event:
For GBC morning events, the event is cancelled if Baltimore City schools are closed at the scheduled starting time of the event. For GBC afternoon or evening events, cancellations will be announced on the GBC website homepage, www.gbc.org.

1. MAYOR O'MALLEY SIGNS EAST SIDE URBAN RENEWAL BILLS
Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley on December 19 signed into law five urban renewal bills giving the city authority to acquire more than 3,000 properties for a biotech park and surrounding urban revitalization on Baltimore's east side.

2. BIOTECH, REVITALIZATION AND REGIONAL RAIL PLAN AMONG TOP GBC ISSUES FOR 2003 GENERAL ASSEMBLY SESSION
Biotech development in Baltimore, east and west-side revitalization, a regional rail plan and drug treatment funding as a crime reduction strategy are among key issues for the Greater Baltimore Committee going into the 2003 session of the Maryland General Assembly.

3. PRIVATIZATION OF STATE HEALTH SERVICES COULD SURFACE IN ASSEMBLY
Privatization of state-delivered health services will be among health care issues that could surface during the 2003 Maryland General Assembly, Delegate Samuel I. Rosenberg, chair of a key House public health subcommittee, told GBC members on Dec. 12.

4. FRY NAMES DODSON, PETTENGILL AS GBC VICE PRESIDENTS
GBC President Donald Fry announced the appointment of Devon L. Dodson and Lisbeth van Horne Pettengill as vice presidents of the Greater Baltimore Committee. They joined the GBC staff on January 6. Dodson will be primarily responsible for managing GBC government affairs activities and public policy issues, and Pettengill will be responsible for managing the GBC's day to day operations in addition to education-related policy issues.

5. GBC WEBSITE TRAFFIC MORE THAN DOUBLES
The Greater Baltimore Committee's website, www.gbc.org, has seen a significant increase in traffic between 2000 and 2002. The site's total number of hits increased by 142 percent and its number of visitors increased from more than 50,000 in 2000 to more than 117,000 in 2002.

7. GBC SPONSORS UB PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SERIES FOR SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS, NON-PROFIT MANAGERS
The Greater Baltimore Committee is sponsoring a series of professional development courses aimed at small business owners and nonprofit managers being offered by the Office of Continuing Studies and Professional Development (OCSPD) at the University of Baltimore beginning in January.

8. GBC LEADERSHIP ANNOUNCES CLASS OF 2003
The Leadership, a program sponsored by the GBC, selected 50 Baltimore-area executives from business, non-profit and government to join its Class of 2003. There were 100 applications submitted to the program this year, breaking last year's record high of 96.

9. "ISSUES & ANSWERS" LOOKS AT HIGHER EDUCATION IN JANUARY ON COMCAST
Higher education is the focus of January's "Issues & Answers," a public affairs show produced by Comcast in conjunction with the GBC. Guests on the show will include Dr. Freeman Hrabowski III, president of UMBC; Father Harold Ridley, S.J., president of Loyola College; Dr. Maggie Faulkner, associate provost of Towson University; Clint Coleman, director of public relations for Morgan State University; Dr. Joan Develin Coley, president of McDaniel College; Dr. Kevin Manning, president of Villa Julie College, and Dr. Robert Bogomolny, president, University of Baltimore.
