Greater Baltimore Committee Urges Focus on Three-Pronged Strategy for Growth Around University of Maryland, Hopkins and Inner Harbor Baltimore City's resurgence as a place to live, work and thrive will hinge on how well business, government and community leaders work together to take advantage of emerging economic development opportunities related to two major research universities and the city's popular waterfront, says the Greater Baltimore Committee's new chairman, Francis B. Burch Jr. The potential for dramatic business growth around the University of Maryland on Baltimore's west side and Johns Hopkins University's medical campus on the east side has major implications for the business climate of the city and the region, Burch told 900 business, civic and political leaders at the GBC Annual Meeting on May 10. GBC Announces Board Officers, New Board Members For 2001-2002 The Greater Baltimore Committee, at its May 10 Annual Meeting, elected board officers for 2001-2002 and 6 new board members. The new board members join the board officers and 28 current board members in directing the work of the region's most prominent organization of business leaders. Board officers for 2001-2002 include: Chairman - Francis B. Burch, Jr., Esq., co-chairman , Piper Marbury Rudnick & Wolfe LLP; Immediate Past Chairman - John Morton III, president, Bank of America, N.A. Mid-Atlantic Banking Group; Vice Chairman - Anthony W. Deering, chairman & CEO, The Rouse Company; Vice Chairman - Christian H. Poindexter, chairman, president & CEO, Constellation Energy Group; and Secretary/Treasurer - Robert C. Embry, Jr., president, The Abell Foundation. New board members are Harold L. Adams, chairman of the board, RTKL Associates, Inc.; James W. Brinkley, chief operating officer, Legg Mason Wood Walker Inc.; Eddie C. Brown, president, Brown Capital Management; Susan C. Keating, president & CEO, Allfirst Financial, Inc.; Edward D. Miller, M.D., CEO, Johns Hopkins Medicine; and Craig R. Smith, M.D., chairman, president & CEO, Guilford Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Annual Report Details GBC Accomplishments in 2000-2001 Support for Baltimore City's crime reduction efforts and the GBC's continuing work with the Presidents' Roundtable to craft a results-oriented management "game plan" for Mayor O'Malley head the list of accomplishments detailed in the 2001 GBC Annual Report. GBC's Don Fry Named to Chair Regional Transportation Planning Panel Donald C. Fry, executive vice president and general counsel of the Greater Baltimore Committee, has been named by the Baltimore Regional Transportation Board to chair its committee that will develop regional transportation goals for the year 2030. The project, named "Vision 2030," was launched at a May 15 breakfast event at The Warehouse at Camden Yards that was hosted by Baltimore County Executive Dutch Ruppersberger, chair of the Baltimore Regional Transportation Board. GBC Golfers to Test Their Games at Greystone on July 10 The Greater Baltimore Committee has begun accepting sponsorships and player registrations for its Golf Challenge 2001, to be held Tuesday, July 10 at Greystone Golf Course in White Hall, Maryland. Play will begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start for the captain's choice team format on Greystone's challenging layout. Registration fees are $150 per golfer or $500 per foursome, which includes cart, free range balls, a free yardage book, continental breakfast, beverages on the course and an awards luncheon. The tournament will feature a hole-in-one contest, prizes for closest to the pin and longest drive and an array of other prizes. Golfers may also register by fax or online from the GBC's web site. Sponsorship packages are available ranging from a $1,500 "Ace" package to a $500 "Birdie" sponsorship. Enhanced hole sponsorships are also available for $200. Kim Morton Named GBC V.P.; Stewart, Carlies Join Staff Kimberly B. Morton has been named a vice president of the GBC. Morton, a former assistant state's attorney for Baltimore City, joined the GBC staff in February to coordinate its work to support intra-city development projects. As a vice president, Morton will assume some government relations responsibilities in addition to continuing her work on some of the major current projects in the city, including the Hippodrome Performing Arts Center project and the west side redevelopment initiative. Thomas J. Stewart, who for the last six years has managed office operations for the Baltimore Center for Performing Arts, has been named director of events for the Greater Baltimore Committee. He will manage the development and presentation of the GBC's popular year-long program of special events. Cheryl R. Carlies joined the staff of The Leadership on May 21 as an administrative assistant. She has more than 10 years of experience in customer relations and services at Federal Express Inc. in Washington, D. C. and Kraft Foodservice, Inc. in Savage, MD. Turn your whole office into a sales force with "Sales Techniques for the Non-Salesperson," the June 6 GBC/WQSR Business Breakfast Seminar taking place at the Renaissance Harborplace Hotel.
