1. GBC LEADERS: 'SMART' BUSINESS-GOVERNMENT PARTNERSHIPS HOLD KEY TO BALTIMORE'S BIGGEST REVITALIZATION IN 20 YEARS
The kind of active, engaged teamwork between business, government and community that spawned Baltimore City's "renaissance" of the 1960s and 70s has surfaced again as the city embarks on the most aggressive comprehensive revitalization effort in more than 20 years, say leaders of the Greater Baltimore Committee.
The future success of dramatic revitalization initiatives under way on Baltimore's west and east sides will be directly linked to public and private partners' ability to make economically "smart" decisions together as the projects unfold, GBC Chairman Francis B. Burch, Jr. told more than 800 members at the GBC's 2002 Annual Meeting on May 2.

2. GBC WELCOMES SIX NEW DIRECTORS TO ITS BOARD
The Greater Baltimore Committee has elected six top executives from Baltimore-area firms to its board of directors in 2002.
Joining the GBC Board of Directors at its May 2 annual meeting were Drew Berry, vice president and general manager of WMAR-TV; Mark S. Bartlett, managing partner of Ernst & Young, LLP; Roger Calvert, president and CEO of Ferris, Baker Watts, Inc.; James B. Sellinger, vice president, technical sales support, IBM Americas; and Arnold Williams, managing director of Abrams, Foster, Nole & Williams.
Meanwhile, George J. Kilroy, president and CEO of PHH Arval, joined the GBC board at its April meeting.

3. CITY'S OVERHAUL OF HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT DRAWS FROM GBC-PRESIDENTS' ROUNDTABLE RECOMMENDATIONS
A comprehensive overhaul of human resources management practices in Baltimore City government has, during the last 10 months, addressed more than 70 percent of the key findings and recommendations of a 2001 Greater Baltimore Committee-Presidents' Roundtable report, according to Elliott L. Wheelan, the city's new human resources director.
Major recommendations being implemented from the GBC-Presidents' Roundtable report on the city's personnel management, presented to Mayor Martin O'Malley in July 2001, include outsourcing the city's employee health clinic, streamlining a formerly cumbersome hiring process and establishing a pilot performance management system.

4. COMCAST LAUNCHES GBC'S "ISSUES & ANSWERS" PROGRAM IN BALTIMORE CITY; SUMMER TOURISM IS FEATURED TOPIC FOR JUNE SEGMENTS
"Issues & Answers," a public affairs program produced by Comcast Cable in conjunction with the Greater Baltimore Committee, launched in Baltimore City on May 6 to more than 100,000 subscribers. The program, which already airs in Annapolis and Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Harford and Howard counties, is now broadcast in Baltimore City Monday-Friday on Channel 73 during CNN-Headline News.
June's segments of the show will focus on summer tourism activities in the region. Guests include Dan Lincoln, Baltimore Area Convention and Visitors Association (BACVA); Jeff Trueman, B&O Railroad Museum; Tracy Baskerville, Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts; Craig Peddicord, Baltimore County Conference and Visitors Bureau, and Kathleen Boozer from the Discovery Channel Ducks.

5. COLLEGETOWN NETWORK EXPANDS OPPORTUNITIES FOR BALTIMORE COLLEGE STUDENTS
Between 2000 and 2001, the Baltimore Collegetown Network, a consortium of 13 colleges and universities in the region, improved interaction between area schools through the creation of a shuttle system between colleges and a new website (www.colltown.org) aimed at enhancing the visibility of the network's institutions and activities. Elizabeth Toole, director of the Baltimore Collegetown Network, told the GBC Education Committee on May 7 that the network helps to bring college students to Baltimore by promoting the city as a college town.
