1. GENERAL ASSEMBLY AVOIDS MAJOR TAXES, BUT ENACTS HEALTH TAX, CLOSES "LOOPHOLES"
Though state lawmakers considered a number of proposals for significant tax increases, the 2003 Maryland General Assembly, which ended April 7, ultimately managed to avoid inflicting long-term damage to the state's business climate.

Meanwhile, lawmakers decided to preserve, but cap, a key historic preservation tax credit for commercial developers that is strongly supported by the GBC.

2. GBC'S FRY TAKES REGIONAL MESSAGE ON THE ROAD

Greater Baltimore Committee President Don Fry continues to aggressively reach out to regional audiences. He was a speaker at the Maryland-Washington Minority Contractors Association's first annual membership breakfast on March 19, spoke to two key business audiences in Harford County during the past month, and discussed regional economic development with the GBC Leadership CEO program.

Click here for more on Fry's community appearances.

3. GBC MEMBERSHIP DIRECTORY OFFERS ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITIES FOR 2003-2004
Production of the GBC's 2003 Membership Directory and Business Guide is underway. This year's directory will again be published by Media Two, a leading supplier of custom publishing services in the mid-Atlantic region. Advertising space is available to GBC members only, along with an additional opportunity to be listed, to advertise and to link member websites to the GBC's online business guide at www.gbc.org.

Distributed to more than 1,200 CEOs and executives throughout Greater Baltimore, the GBC directory serves as the region's handbook of business leadership. For more information on advertising in the directory, contact Therese Bonander at 410-828-0120, x237.

4. GBC'S 25TH ANNUAL LUNCH WITH THE ORIOLES WELCOMES NEW BASEBALL SEASON
More than 450 business executives celebrated the new baseball season, greeted the 2003 Orioles and reminisced about the 1983 World Series Champion Orioles team at the GBC's 25th Annual Lunch with the Orioles event on April 2nd.

Click here for details and photos from the 2003 GBC Lunch with the Orioles event.

5. BUSINESS-SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS DEPEND ON CLOSE COMMUNICATION, MEASURABLE GOALS
Business-school partnerships most often succeed through close communication and establishment of measurable goals, said schools volunteer Sally Michel at the April 1st meeting of the GBC Education Committee. Michel recruits business partners at the request of Baltimore City Mayor Martin O'Malley to improve the quality of schools in ways ranging from enhancing reading programs to painting stairwells.

Click here for more on business-school partnerships.

6. BUSINESS MENTORS TEACH EX-OFFENDERS JOB SKILLS THROUGH YES NETWORK
Sixty percent of Maryland's prisoners return to Baltimore City upon their release, according to Marcus Pollock, who works to help ex-offenders re-enter society. Few of those roughly 8,000 individuals receive in-prison job training that would help them obtain long-term employment after prison, he said at a March 20 meeting of the GBC's Public Safety Committee. Without intervention, two-thirds of those ex-offenders go back to their former ways of life and return to prison within two or three years.

Click here for details about the Yes Network.

7. MAY "ISSUES & ANSWERS" LOOKS AT MARYLAND REGULATORY AUTHORITY
Guests on this month's "Issues & Answers," the public affairs show produced by Comcast in partnership with the GBC, will focus on Maryland's regulatory authority. GBC President Donald C. Fry interviews four of the state's most prominent regulators, including Commissioner of Financial Regulations Mary Louise Preis, Maryland Insurance Commissioner Steven B. Larsen, and The Honorable Thomas Dewberry, chief administrative law judge for the Office of Administrative Hearings, and Robert Murray, executive director of the Health Services Cost Review Commission.

Click here for "Issues & Answers" times, channels and schedule of guests.

8. HARVEST FOR THE HUNGRY FOOD COLLECTION INCREASES BY 28 PERCENT
The spring 2003 campaign of Harvest for the Hungry, co-sponsored by the GBC, collected 182,513 pounds of food this year, 28 percent more than the amount collected last year. The Greater Baltimore Committee and its members were key participants in the campaign, a volunteer effort by various corporations and organizations to raise food, funds and awareness for the Maryland Food Bank and its counterparts throughout Maryland.
