City Begins Implementing GBC-Presidents' Roundtable Personnel Recommendations
- Under the leadership of its new director, Elliott L. Wheelan, Baltimore City's Department of Human Resources has begun implementing key recommendations made in the 2001 GBC-Presidents' Roundtable study of city personnel management practices.
Wheelan recently presented Mayor Martin O'Malley with initial plans to streamline the city's hiring process and its job classification process and to reduce the city's reliance on testing to evaluate employment candidates.

When Businesses Conflict - Resolving Disputes Through Outside Mediation is Topic of November 14 GBC/WQSR Breakfast Seminar
- Rachel Wohl, executive director of the Maryland Mediation and Conflict Resolution Office, and Bob Fleishman, vice president of corporate affairs and general counsel for Constellation Energy Group, will discuss ways to peacefully resolve business disputes and other conflicts through creative problem solving at the GBC/WQSR Business Breakfast Seminar on Nov. 14. Fry Named to Rail Transit Advisory Committee
- Donald C. Fry, GBC Executive Vice President and General Counsel, has been named by the Glendening administration to serve on an advisory committee to study new transit corridors for the Baltimore region. The committee, which met for the first time on October 11, will work on a Baltimore Region Rail Corridor Plan to prioritize future investments over the next 20 to 40 years in new transit corridors to accommodate potential light rail, heavy rail or Bus Rapid Transit.

Mayor's Awards Luncheon to be Held Dec. 17; Nominations Sought
- The GBC will hold its 2001 Mayor's Business Recognition Awards luncheon on Monday, December 17 from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at the Renaissance Harborplace Hotel. The awards recognize businesses for outstanding corporate leadership and community service in improving the quality of life in Baltimore City. GBC Co-Sponsors Rail Corridor Symposium Series
- The Greater Baltimore Committee is co-sponsoring an eight-session symposium series with the Maryland Transit Administration and two other organizations to broaden public awareness of the opportunities and challenges of building a system of rail lines. The series is part of the MTA's effort to inform the public about the Baltimore Regional Rail System Plan.
Each symposium will feature national experts on designing and planning rail projects, elected officials and business leaders involved in funding and advocating such projects. A panel of civic leaders from the Baltimore region, including GBC President Donald P. Hutchinson and GBC Executive Vice President Donald C. 144 GBC Member Employees Volunteer as School Speakers
- More than 144 GBC volunteers from various organizations have signed up to speak in area high schools for the Maryland Business Roundtable for Education (MBRT)'s annual Achievement Counts campaign.
Representatives from these organizations will make presentations to ninth-grade students on the importance of performing well in school, building an impressive transcript, and preparing for the workforce. The goal of the program is to get the message out to students that how they perform in high school does make a difference and will impact their future success.

Russo Expands City School Reform Efforts
- After a year of budgetary focus on improving its elementary schools, Baltimore City Public Schools will submit a $362 million request to the state for "Remedy Plan" funding for school improvement that would significantly expand next year's reform efforts to middle and high schools.
"To improve a school system, you have to attack every level," Baltimore City Public Schools CEO Carmen V. Russo told members of the GBC Education Committee at its Oct. 2 meeting.

Focus of November "Issues & Answers" is Emergency Preparedness
- Emergency preparedness and public safety are the topics for the November "Issues & Answers" programs, the GBC's show on Comcast Cable television. Each program will focus on crime trends and new efforts for public safety protection in light of the September 11th attacks. Guests include Harford County Sheriff Joe Meadows, Baltimore County Police Chief Terrence Sheridan, BWI Airport's Acting Executive Director Beverly Swaim-Staley, and Baltimore City Police Commissioner Edward Norris.
