1. U.S. SENATOR PAUL SARBANES TO BE KEYNOTE SPEAKER AT GBC'S BUSINESS OUTLOOK CONFERENCE ON OCT. 30
U.S. Senator Paul Sarbanes will be the featured speaker at the GBC's 2003 Business Outlook Conference on Wednesday, October 30 beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the Renaissance Harborplace Hotel. Sarbanes will discuss the Public Company Accounting Reform and Investor Protection Act of 2002 and explain what the bill means to investors. Another top economist will discuss the impact of corporate malfeasance on the market and provide a forecast of the market in the year ahead.

2. LEARN TO TACKLE IMPOSSIBLE PROBLEMS ON NOV. 6
Problem solving can sometimes be a difficult task, but Dr. Sam Seymour of the Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Laboratory will explain how to deal creatively with complex problems at the GBC's Breakfast Briefing on November 6 at the Johns Hopkins University Downtown Center.

3. GBC MAYOR'S BUSINESS RECOGNITION AWARDS TO BE PRESENTED DEC. 17
The GBC's annual Mayor's Business Recognition Awards luncheon will take place on December 17 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Sponsored by the Baltimore Development Corporation, the awards honor local businesses that have demonstrated significant corporate leadership and service to improve the quality of life in Baltimore City.

1. DONALD C. FRY NAMED NEW PRESIDENT OF THE GREATER BALTIMORE COMMITTEE
The Greater Baltimore Committee has named Donald C. Fry the organization's new president, GBC Chairman Francis B. Burch Jr. announced on October 14. Fry, 47, the GBC's executive vice president and general counsel for the past three-and-a-half years, will become the GBC president when the organization's current president, Donald P. Hutchinson, steps down on Nov. 1 to become president and CEO of SunTrust Maryland.

2. HUTCHINSON MOVES FROM GBC TO SUNTRUST ON NOV. 1
GBC President Donald P. Hutchinson announced on Oct. 1 that he has accepted the position as president of SunTrust Bank - Maryland. He will leave the GBC and join SunTrust on November 1.

3. GBC SEEKING COMMITMENTS FROM TOWNSEND, EHRLICH ON TOP REGIONAL PRIORITIES
Support for the development of bioparks on Baltimore's east and west sides and development of a regional rail system are among top priorities for strengthening the region's business climate recommended by the GBC to candidates for Maryland governor. The GBC released the report, entitled "Setting the Agenda - Governing Through Leadership and Accountability," to the media and public on Oct.17.

4. AMIABLE, PROVOCATIVE RUSSERT FINDS 350 BALTIMORE ADMIRERS
More than 350 GBC members and partners welcomed Tim Russert, managing editor and moderator of NBC's "Meet the Press" to Baltimore at an October 16 breakfast program at the Maryland Science Center.

5. NEW BCCC PRESIDENT FAVORS PROPOSAL TO REDUCE MATH REQUIREMENT
A proposal by Abell Foundation researchers that state-mandated math requirements be re-examined for some community college degree and certificate programs has drawn support from the new president of Baltimore City Community College, Dr. Sylvester E. McKay, who spoke at an Oct. 1 meeting of the GBC Education Committee.

6. BALTIMORE IS FEATURED PROMINENTLY IN NY TIMES, BOSTON GLOBE AS GREAT PLACE TO WORK AND LIVE, MODEL FOR INNOVATIVE GOVERNMENT
Baltimore received national attention recently in articles from the New York Times and the Boston Globe, which praised the city for its living and working environment and for its innovative CitiStat program under Baltimore City Mayor Martin O'Malley.

7. MORE THAN 20 GBC MEMBERS RECOGNIZED AT HIPPODROME CEREMONY
Members of the cast of the Broadway show "42nd Street" entertained more than 150 guests who attended the Oct. 1 preview of the Hippodrome Performing Arts Center. The restored theater, scheduled to open in early 2004, will be the centerpiece of Baltimore's west-side revitalization, a key initiative of the GBC.
