Executives to Preview Next Year's Economy on Oct. 31

  • Is your business ready for next year's economy? Find out at the GBC's Greater Baltimore Business Outlook Conference 2002 on Wednesday, October 31. The 8 a.m. program, to be held at the Hyatt Regency Baltimore hotel, will feature Alan D. Levenson, Ph.D., chief economist from T. Rowe Price Associates; Legg Mason's Chief Market Strategist Richard E. Cripps, CFA; and Daniel B. Gordon, director and senior technology consultant for PricewaterhouseCoopers.

    The speakers at this year's event, sponsored by Villa Julie College, Comcast Business Communications, The Daily Record, Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP, Johns Hopkins Medicine, Brann Worldwide, and PricewaterhouseCoopers, will provide a forecast of next year's economic trends, technology issues, and projections of how the Dow Jones and Nasdaq will perform in 2002.

Daily Record Publishes Ad Series Highlighting GBC

  • A series of full-page informational ads featuring Greater Baltimore Committee volunteer executives began appearing September 10 in the Daily Record. The ads, which will appear in the paper through November 10, are intended to raise community awareness of the GBC's role as a business advocate.

    The ads feature the work of three executive volunteers from GBC member companies. Featured in the ads are: Michelle McBride, executive director of managed care and business development for Bon Secours Health Systems; Kent Malwitz, director of effective-e, a division of The ACI Group; and Gail Kaplan, owner-operator of the Polo Grill.

GBC Honored at Downtown Partnership Annual Meeting

  • The Downtown Partnership of Baltimore honored the Greater Baltimore Committee and the Presidents' Roundtable on September 25 for their recommendations to Mayor Martin O'Malley on ways to enhance city government, demonstrating that private sector expertise can provide lasting public benefits.

    The GBC and Presidents' Roundtable brought together more than 200 management and legal experts in 2000 and 2001 for the compilation of two separate reports dealing with the efficiency of Baltimore City government.

City Schools Need $291 Million More from State, Commission Calculates

  • Annual state funding for Baltimore City's public schools would need to increase by $291 million under a funding model currently being considered by the Thornton Commission, a state panel charged with reviewing the state's school-funding formulas.

    Tina M. Bjarekull, deputy state superintendent for the Maryland State Department of Education, briefed members of the GBC Education Committee on Sept. 4 about the Thornton Commission's work.

  • Nominations are being sought for the 2001 mayor's awards recognizing businesses for outstanding corporate leadership and community service in improving the quality of life in Baltimore City. October "Issues & Answers" Series Spotlights Health Care

  • "Issues & Answers," the GBC's show on Comcast Cable television, will examine the health care system in October, tackling such issues as the shortage of nurses and pharmacists and the increasing need for elder care. October guests include Cal Pierson, president of the Maryland Hospital Association; Baltimore City Health Commissioner Peter Beilenson; Isabelle Firth, president of the Mid-Atlantic Non-Profit Health and Housing Association; Wayne Dyke, member of the Maryland Board of Pharmacists; and Kathy McCullough, senior vice president of patient care services for the University of Maryland Medical Systems.

    The GBC's "Issues & Answers" program broadcasts 12 times per day during CNN Headline News, Monday through Friday.

  • The GBC's online business guide now lists all GBC members by business category. The content and layout of the online guide was recently upgraded and redesigned. Member listings in the online business guide may be upgraded for a nominal fee to include a link to a company web site and an online ad.
