GBC NEWS
===========
1. GBC HEARS RESPONSES TO ABELL STUDY OF BCCC STUDENTS' REMEDIAL NEEDS
A recent Abell Foundation study documenting an alarming need for remedial courses, particularly math, among students entering Baltimore City Community College drew responses from the commission that oversees Maryland's colleges and from a senior city public school official at the GBC's September 9 Education Committee meeting.
Dr. John A. Sabatini, a Maryland Higher Education Commission official, challenged the Abell report's suggestion that math requirements be re-examined for some college degree and certificate programs where students do not need math to succeed. Meanwhile, the Baltimore City Public School System is implementing a number of programs to strengthen the skills of its teachers, and has significantly increased minimum achievement standards for students, said Dr. Cassandra Jones, the system's chief academic officer.
