Red Line Advisory Committee Bills Vetoed, Replaced by Executive Order

Citing the fact that they are redundant with an executive order, on May 26 Governor Ehrlich vetoed SB 873 and HB 1309 which would have established a citizens advisory committee for the Red Line.  Executive Order 01.01.2006.04, signed the same day, establishes the "Red Line Community Advisory Council."  The council will have 15 members selected by the Governor, and will provide advice to the MTA on "potential neighborhood impacts" and "economic development activities."  While less specific than the vetoed bills, the executive order seems to provide a similar framework for public input and oversight.  As with the bills, much will depend on who is appointed to the council and how quickly that is accomplished.  To see the Executive Order, click here.

MTA Schedules Hearings on Bus Restructuring as Directed by General Assembly

The budget passed this year by the General Assembly included a provision that delays implementation of the second phase of MTA's regional bus restructuring program known as the Greater Baltimore Bus Initiative (GBBI).  MTA had intended to proceed with changes later this month, but this will be delayed until after the MTA holds public hearings and submits a report on the outcomes of the first round of changes implemented last fall. For information on the hearing locations and proposed changes, click here.

Southern Arizona Voters Pass Transportation Measure Funded by Sales Tax

Following years of failure, last month voters in Pima County, Arizona passed a 20-year $2.1 billion transportation initiative.  The initiative, funded by a 1/2 cent sales tax, includes over $500 million for public transportation, including additional bus service and a streetcar line between the University of Arizona and downtown Tucson.  The majority of funding will support road projects throughout the county where population is expected to grow by 54% over 20 years.  For more information, click here.
