Looking Ahead: A Focus on CompetitivenessIn 2013, building on the core pillars for economic growth and job creation cited in the GBC's Gaining a Competitive Edge report, the GBC will engage in broadened, comprehensive advocacy for competitiveness, focusing on issues that impact a competitive business environment in Maryland including: Mobility in Maryland. Support creative solutions to break the stalemate in Annapolis over funding transportation infrastructure. The GBC will also work to support the strengthening commuter rail, intercity passenger rail serving Baltimore, freight rail and port capabilities. Building an innovation economy. Build on Maryland's strengths in life sciences and information technology to promote job creation and entrepreneurship around the state's substantial research and technology strengths. • Bioscience Initiative Baltimore-D.C. business teamwork. Strengthen collaboration with the Greater Washington Board of Trade to achieve unified business advocacy on key issues relating to business competitiveness in the Baltimore-Washington corridor and the state. • Baltimore and Washington D.C. Collaborative Workforce development coordination. Work to develop maximum alignment of the state's education resources with requirements of Maryland businesses in a knowledge-based economy. Support a focus on STEM education at K-12 and in higher education. Baltimore City economic development. Update the vision for the Inner Harbor, develop and implement fresh strategies for the city's economic growth. • Transforming the Inner Harbor Experience Legislative advocacy for competitiveness. Focus state lawmakers on ensuring Maryland policy is aligned with core pillars of economic growth and job creation. Minority business development. Advancing the business culture of greater Baltimore by fostering an atmosphere in which majority and minority- and women-owned businesses can form mutually-beneficial strategic partnerships. Energy issues. Advocating for the development of a long-range strategic plan to ensure an adequate and reasonably-priced future energy supply for Maryland. Value for members. Providing programs and services to GBC members that enhance their community involvement, open doors for new business opportunities and highlight the company's assets to the Greater Baltimore community. |
