Priorities

Speaking up for business; nurturing business support on policy issues. The GBC is a visible and credible business advocate, working with local, state and federal government leaders to address key GBC priorities and to develop more competitive tax, regulatory and economic development policies that will strengthen the business climate of the Baltimore region and Maryland. Led by President & CEO Donald C. Fry, the GBC is the voice of the Greater Baltimore business community in Annapolis. The GBC maintains an informed and vigorous presence in Annapolis during the Maryland General Assembly and is fully engaged with key elected officials on legislative issues impacting the business community.

Developing a regional transportation system; enabling the region to grow and thrive in the coming decades.  Transportation funding and mobility are critical economic growth challenges for our region. The GBC is a leading advocate for increased transportation funds to provide an efficient and integrated transportation system of roads and transit. The GBC has been instrumental in gaining funding to begin the planning and construction of the Red Line, an east-west rapid transit system from Woodlawn to Inner Harbor East, and expansion of the existing Metro Green Line north from Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions.

Nurturing bioscience, life science and technology industry growth. Recognizing potential for the region's growth in the emerging bioscience industry, the GBC has emerged as a lead organization supporting the development of two bioscience parks. The University of Maryland Baltimore's BioPark on Baltimore's west side and the Science + Technology Park Johns Hopkins, coupled with an 80-acre neighborhood revitalization on Baltimore’s east side are projected to generate up to 10,000 new jobs. Through communications and outreach, the GBC also works to educate business, community and political leaders about the regional economic growth potential in the life science industry.

Strengthening minority and women-owned businesses in the region.  Through its "Bridging the Gap" initiative, the GBC works to strengthen and expand minority and women-owned businesses in the region and promotes inclusion of minority and women-owned firms in emerging business opportunities.

Developing solutions to address Maryland's energy crisis.  The Greater Baltimore Committee is urging advocating for the development of a long-range strategic plan to ensure an adequate and reasonably-priced future energy supply for Maryland by significantly strengthening Maryland's power transmission and generating infrastructure.

Preparing for growth from Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) and other economic development.  The GBC nurtures public-private strategic teamwork on BRAC that makes room for growth, and enhances the region’s business climate and quality of life in the process.

Developing teamwork between Baltimore and Washington, D.C. area business advocates.  The GBC works to build effective business development and public policy teamwork between the business communities in greater Baltimore and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

Building a world class workforce.  Preparing and developing a highly educated workforce that is competitive to meet the challenges of today’s knowledge-based global economy.

Strengthening education resources in the region.  Recognizing the importance of education institutions and the critical role they will play in the region’s future economic competitiveness, the GBC works to strengthen education resources in the region and state.

Delivering value to GBC members. The GBC is dedicated to providing its members with quality information, insight and involvement. The GBC offers a comprehensive year-round program of professional development seminars, business networking events, major presentations and special presentations, as well as opportunities to serve on committees focusing on key issues that affect the region’s business owners, managers and employees.
