In Places Rated Almanac's most recent rating, Greater Baltimore ranked 22nd nationally for higher education. This placed the region 8th among the 20 metros. Raleigh-Durham and Boston rank 1st and 2nd nationally, while Richmond ranks 149th.
Greater Baltimore ranks 7th among the 20 metro areas with 102,936 enrolled in area colleges and universities. Boston and Washington rank 1st and 2nd among the 20 regions, while Richmond ranks 20th.
For college and university enrollment per 100,000 population, Greater Baltimore also ranks 7th among the 20 metros. Raleigh-Durham and Charlotte rank 1st and 2nd, while Minneapolis and Cleveland rank 20th and 19th.
In a new ranking for this report, Greater Baltimore ranks 2nd among the 20 regions for university research and development funding with $983,848,000 received in 1997. Boston ranks 15th, with over $1 billion, while Indianapolis and Charlotte have no reported R&D funding.
