With a metropolitan population of more than 2.5 million, Greater Baltimore continues to rank 9th among the 20 benchmark metro areas included in this study.
The region's annual population growth rate of 1.4 percent from 1998-2000, continued to be slow when compared to the other benchmark regions and to the national average of 1.6 percent. Six regions experienced growth rates in excess of 4 percent, while Greater Baltimore was one of six regions that grew at less than 2 percent annual rates.
Greater Baltimore's median age of 36.6 ranks it 18th among the 20 benchmark regions, dropping from 14th in 1999. Median ages range from 30.9 in Austin to 40.0 in Tampa. Greater Baltimore ranks 15th for percentage of population aged 18 to 64.
Greater Baltimore ranks 3rd for black population, 13th for Asian population and 19th for Hispanic population.
