Greater Baltimore's average airfare cost of 12 cents per mile ranks 2nd among the benchmarks for air fare value. Only Seattle's fares are lower at 11.6 cents per mile.
Greater Baltimore ranked first among the 20 benchmarks for air passenger growth from 1999 to 2001, with 14.4 percent growth. Austin (9.4 percent), Charlotte (7.4 percent) and Raleigh-Durham (7.4 percent) were the fastest growing after BWI Airport.
Regarding mass transit, the percentage of Greater Baltimore workers over 16 using public transportation dropped from 7.7 in 1990 to 6.2 percent. Nevertheless, the Greater Baltimore region remains one of only a half-dozen regions in the study where more than 6 percent of workers use public transportation. This suggests that demand remains in this region for improved regional transit.
Meanwhile, the average commute in Greater Baltimore increased from 26 minutes in 1990 to 29.8 minutes in 2000, ranking the region 18th among the 20 benchmark metros.
